Navigating the Holidays in a Pandemic

Donations from Oak’s recent canned food drive.

It’s December and you know what that means…. holidays! Holidays amidst a pandemic will be different and maybe a cause for disappointment. But Oak’s leadership is putting Holiday Spirit in the air with many different activities such as a canned food drive and diverse holiday posters.

As Oaks way of giving back to the community during the holidays, Oak’s Community Service team organized a successful canned food drive. The canned food drive generated 15 bags and 5 boxes of food. An 8th-grade student, Owen Lee who was the head of the canned food drive, states, “It’s important to give back to the community, especially with Covid-19 a lot of people need the food.”

Normally food banks are always busy during the holidays because everyone’s in the giving spirit. However, according to PBS, donations and support at food banks have increased tremendously this year. “Demand for the support that food banks and dining halls offer has soared. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for these services has skyrocketed.” With the pandemic, there are far fewer volunteers, but many donations from people who want to help food banks during the pandemic.

In another effort to increase joy, Spirit and Activities joined with Community Service to create holiday posters. Holiday posters were  hung on the front gate about the different holidays. These holidays such as Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Japanese New Year, and the Persian Winter Solstice. “This is important because it spreads awareness to students and teachers and gets people in the festive mood,” states Delilah.

Holidays in December are all about giving and spreading love and joy to everyone around you. When the pandemic arrived at our doorsteps it was a very difficult time, and it still is. Some even wondered how we would celebrate the holidays this year around. While social distancing and following safety guidelines, Oak has done the best they can to spread the holiday spirit with food drives, holiday posters, and lots of positivity in the air. Happy Holidays everyone!
