While you walk around in your neighborhood

While you walk around in your neighborhood

While you walk in your neighborhood, you see people around
No one says a peep, no one makes a sound
You hide with your phone, and you think it’s acceptable
Why be scared? Are we even respectable?

We choose to ignore the sights and sounds
Making conversations with people just isn’t allowed
There are friends to be made, ways to smile
But we think we should just look away, for a while

If we took that away, maybe you would wave hi
Talk a while with your neighbor, look them dead in the eye
Pick up trash and recycle, pay attention to the good
While you walk around in your neighborhood

Make conversations with friends and strangers
Help take out the trash, pick up a newspaper
Just be kind for the greater good
While you walk around in your neighborhood

So the next time that you walk there
Please show that you really care
Do everything that you think you should
While you walk around in your neighborhood
